Other Coil Projects

From the last post, students were given the task of creating a  project that was some sort of bowl and used the coil method to create it.  Here are a few more examples...

Some students used plastic bowls for their "molds"

And some students just decided to free-build their projects.
It was a lot of fun to see all their creativity!

Taco Bowls

Awhile back I headed to our local Menards to buy Taco Bowls.  They had two packs on sale for $1.79 each.  I bought 80 of them.  Yes the guy helping me load them though I was crazy... I mean who needs 80 taco bowls.

Well, Art teachers do.  My 6th graders used them when creating their clay coil projects.  The assignment was to create a project that had two requirements:  it has to be some sort of bowl, it has to be created using the coil method.  They finished them with tempera and varnish.  I think they are awesome!

Cartoons in Clay

Students in my after school cartooning program were assigned the task of creating their own cartoon character.  One of the things I had them do was create a clay slab version of their main cartoon character.  They turned out pretty cute!

Dot Day in Clay

So the first day that I was teaching Aftershock art just happened to be September 15... International Dot Day!  The class had been challenging; students were working to find the balance between fun after school activities and showing classroom behavior.

So I started with clay...

Students were told they had to create a circular design with texture.  All else was left open for them to decide.  We were using up old clay left from last year so I wasn't getting too worried about what they wanted to make.

and of course a few finished early and got to "play" until clean up time.

Illuminated Letters... sort of anyway.

one of my students just happened to spell his name while putting them away... :)
My 6th graders are finishing up their "illuminated" clay letters.  They are using illuminated letters as the foundation for their next two assignments. (clay and printmaking).  For this assignment they were to create their first or last initial in a clay slab.  They had to have a minimum of 3 layers.  We finished them by painting them with tempera cakes and Dick Blick Varnish.

They are really beautiful and I love the way the varnish makes them shine.

One of my favorite things...

Awhile back I posted about clay.

Today we started finishing our clay projects.  I have to say that I love this part.  I especially love "staining" our clay projects.  The magic of it all is awesome. Read here to know more about it.

Today they started with getting their projects back, oil pastel'n the details and then staining them.  It was magical fun!

Here are some pinwheels from the first two classes:

Here are some trivets:
