Graphic Design and Packaging.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://metv.com/stories/heres-how-these-seven-chip-brands-have-changed-since-we-were-kids" target="_blank"><img height="334" src="https://metvcdn.metv.com/tGMf4-1462901086-856-blog-Header%20Chips.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We looked at how graphic designers create packaging that make us want to buy their products. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We discussed the facts that must be listed (ingredients, directions, size, cost, etc)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
... and then they got to work.<br />
They had to develop a product that the world needs and then design the packaging for their product. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs0TpxJ75mjBHPY7m44sj1-ZeLQcvW3Wfndk7O2eUXguEj6q9mStabitMXRELzPI0KlWfqA7yDwco1o8PBKx1KYuW15BmShkaApnKjSLaf-bcYxHqRTf3M_jZhMKK28KYbsfNh0iAQ1TA/s1600/IMG_20191121_130122.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1297" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs0TpxJ75mjBHPY7m44sj1-ZeLQcvW3Wfndk7O2eUXguEj6q9mStabitMXRELzPI0KlWfqA7yDwco1o8PBKx1KYuW15BmShkaApnKjSLaf-bcYxHqRTf3M_jZhMKK28KYbsfNh0iAQ1TA/s320/IMG_20191121_130122.jpg" width="259" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once this was done, there were able to create a 3-D package for their product. </div>

As we finished our "right side of the brain drawings" we talked about how artists use the left side of the brain also. We see and use symbols everyday.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Related image" height="200" src="https://i.pinimg.com/originals/16/c9/55/16c9550e0bb2a966e7a6d9a44da843eb.jpg" width="197" /> <img alt="Image result for instagram logo" height="200" src="https://instagram-brand.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Instagram_AppIcon_Aug2017.png?w=300" width="200" /> <img alt="Image result for mcdonalds" height="200" src="https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1150268408287698945/x4f3ITmx_400x400.png" width="200" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We also took a moment to look at symbols throughout history:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Image result for egyptian hieroglyphs" height="213" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/507/19650281680_423057e367_b.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="320" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Egyptian Hieroglyphs</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Image result for keith haring" height="228" src="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0900/4590/products/IMG_8879_1024x1024.jpg?v=1516475890" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="320" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Keith Haring (1958-1990)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/RBmLPmLMej4/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RBmLPmLMej4?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
... and even students younger than them who create artwork with symbols. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students started by creating a worksheet filled with personal symbols that represented who they are. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqzdoW6Y9z-Bex4vqRfFor7NduGT1WSb1JiQ_QTeecXypJgo4-aDeLZgz6pjVwHGjJ8-QmdstXUPjGD3sg5aCyohayMNU-bcv-4xZm7zXUNbrOaXHKspcKUbmk2XVcoQmSlEZO6AYXYfc/s1600/IMG_20191122_144614.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1286" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqzdoW6Y9z-Bex4vqRfFor7NduGT1WSb1JiQ_QTeecXypJgo4-aDeLZgz6pjVwHGjJ8-QmdstXUPjGD3sg5aCyohayMNU-bcv-4xZm7zXUNbrOaXHKspcKUbmk2XVcoQmSlEZO6AYXYfc/s320/IMG_20191122_144614.jpg" width="257" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGrJYmnmYvvmvcFZz1Qu7VWAYT3W15uOEVY5AdqJrMcEv-W2zzcMHfftzAk_KyNNwunfpIKXHYN_2GOWCTTd_TDmTAlxol-2OrxtkVglp5Ua_3CoPChiNGWVKKE-K3W6ITgcR9yEpQjNk/s1600/IMG_20191122_144618.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1296" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGrJYmnmYvvmvcFZz1Qu7VWAYT3W15uOEVY5AdqJrMcEv-W2zzcMHfftzAk_KyNNwunfpIKXHYN_2GOWCTTd_TDmTAlxol-2OrxtkVglp5Ua_3CoPChiNGWVKKE-K3W6ITgcR9yEpQjNk/s320/IMG_20191122_144618.jpg" width="259" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then they went on to create images in which they painted (or used markers) a main symbol. We created these in a "cartoon style" with flat bold colors and we finished them with thick black outlines. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieObyHGMDOzl5xYxy8cc4KBfUNexBpCsLjfsLjUlLTj7B7-tY1aIzqm5nMgkT5cdXgfevc4Fu0pdcUYXZQYNDmXYNgOekrz4JI-gePXS6O4gSBTYSv-bC0Q1KGBLtIr_zC-55cSneAuks/s1600/IMG_20191122_150131.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1387" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieObyHGMDOzl5xYxy8cc4KBfUNexBpCsLjfsLjUlLTj7B7-tY1aIzqm5nMgkT5cdXgfevc4Fu0pdcUYXZQYNDmXYNgOekrz4JI-gePXS6O4gSBTYSv-bC0Q1KGBLtIr_zC-55cSneAuks/s320/IMG_20191122_150131.jpg" width="277" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm6uXi-mmgLrBLWfqHSZE6fvc6OvqTiVwjqauad0_f1yeXMJNj16wjpp6PKIFHadb-7BT8mLMB_Xz0EAY9td9WfGlgPOiygXhMjqHvUc6LiaM9LXpiSNdioz-emzaVUI9eeSDsClrQtU0/s1600/IMG_20191122_150141.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1202" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm6uXi-mmgLrBLWfqHSZE6fvc6OvqTiVwjqauad0_f1yeXMJNj16wjpp6PKIFHadb-7BT8mLMB_Xz0EAY9td9WfGlgPOiygXhMjqHvUc6LiaM9LXpiSNdioz-emzaVUI9eeSDsClrQtU0/s320/IMG_20191122_150141.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally, we put our main symbols onto a symbol filled background, using our personal symbols and more. </div>

Kids change from "loving art and being proud of their creations" to feeling that they "can't draw." It has everything to do with their brains changing and it breaks my heart. So we spend some time learning about our brains and how they work, with art.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://perlardz060202.wixsite.com/universalexploration/single-post/2016/03/02/Left-Right-Hemispheres" target="_blank"><img alt="Related image" height="277" src="https://static.wixstatic.com/media/dd42c8_cff37bd90deb4803984c08b6d5146f74.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We talk about how the left side of their brain is what they use for most of their learning.... Math, Science, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, etc. The left side of their brain is really good at drawing "symbols" but symbols don't really look like the "real object" and therefore we start to say we "can't draw."</div>

Students spent a class time learning how to "see and draw" using contour line skills. These drawings are always amazing to the kids. They learn that if they take their time, look, and use the right side of the brain, they CAN draw. </div>

You can check out more digital images on <a href="https://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?project=1854449" target="_blank">artsonia</a>. It always amazes me how many kids prefer paper and pencil to drawing digitally. </div>

We finished up our non figurative paintings and uploaded them to <a href="https://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?project=1850268" target="_blank">artsonia</a>. They look really, really neat but we needed to do something more with them.... so we made them into parts of other drawings. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image result for value scale" height="110" src="https://helloartsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/7-step-value-scale.png" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Value is an element of art that focuses on the light to dark range of a color. We looked at <a href="http://anseladams.com/" target="_blank">Ansel Adams</a> beautiful black and white value photographs and then got to work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Students worked to create a black and white landscape using oil pastels. They were given a white and a black oil pastel. They were drawing on a grey piece of paper and they had to create 5 different values. Once their images were finished, they cut a main object out of their painting and added it to their drawings. They also had to write a story about their colorful object. They were really fun! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Abstract Art is an image of something broken down into lines, shapes and colors. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We looked at the painting "<i>Musical Forms</i>" by Georges Braque and discussed how once you know the title, you can see more of what the image is based on... but that it isn't an exact drawing of a guitar or music. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Students then took a subject (their name)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and drew them onto 9" square paper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We cut the squares into 3" squares</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and students were able to move them around.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Students focused on turning their names into an abstract image </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglJJIxo4VBqEnyKUTbAsQlLBM7qfL6c3RhLWAxsm7YK1NTuIS6H9ggaa-H70jQW1EhyphenhyphenYDj1Cm0uOPTUQYvHru2sE6nyq6-zXd09eEoEacwU9LLEHIbkjVAvE6P7jOL3xU5I1VJeXUEDGw/s1600/IMG_20191012_145908299.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglJJIxo4VBqEnyKUTbAsQlLBM7qfL6c3RhLWAxsm7YK1NTuIS6H9ggaa-H70jQW1EhyphenhyphenYDj1Cm0uOPTUQYvHru2sE6nyq6-zXd09eEoEacwU9LLEHIbkjVAvE6P7jOL3xU5I1VJeXUEDGw/s400/IMG_20191012_145908299.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The 5th and 6th grade students made these cubes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I finally got around to putting all 600+ on display together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is always impressive to see kids working independently </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
but seeing them all together is so very impressive. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM936ckkuhLNV_Gd3cGYly78Re-oggNVPEyTAfpMmHZEqqtWHkCXTjtbdolbnVerzs_Nxlu73RFf3-wHtJJOu0R2IHxQ1QE-al_0I4v6RlIEulRvs0nESZU3NgmCkmc2xWR6p6sPsyJ74/s1600/IMG_20190930_080924862.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM936ckkuhLNV_Gd3cGYly78Re-oggNVPEyTAfpMmHZEqqtWHkCXTjtbdolbnVerzs_Nxlu73RFf3-wHtJJOu0R2IHxQ1QE-al_0I4v6RlIEulRvs0nESZU3NgmCkmc2xWR6p6sPsyJ74/s400/IMG_20190930_080924862.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The 6th graders created color wheels and when I finally put these on display</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
the kids all impressed. I had put a "exhibit under construction" sign on this </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
cast at the start of the year. When that finally came down and this went up, they agreed</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
it was worth the wait. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The 5th graders are working through the difference between abstract and non-figurative art. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our abstract art project had us drawing our names, chopping them up and rearranging </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
them into images based on lines, shapes and colors. </div>

They did such a great job of creating their creatures and making fun places for them to "live." I also think they did a great job of creating alliterations to go with their projects. By next week I will have finally seen everyone twice for each project... So a quick review:<br />
<br />
5th graders are working away on creating their "awful alphabet creatures" and their colored pencil skills. We started by reading the book "The Absolutely Awful Alphabet" by Mordicai Gerstein. It is full of absolutely awful creatures created from the alphabet.<br />

They are working on their final copies during art class and during Map Testing time. I am super excited to see these finished and uploaded to Artsonia in the next few weeks. I am also excited to read all the alliterations they will have come up with for their images. </div>

This last week the students worked on finishing up their art cubes in their ELO's. When they came back to class we talked about Artsonia and how to use it. We then practiced uploading our cubes. Make <a href="https://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?project=1798802" target="_blank">sure you check them out</a>... they are pretty awesome.<br />

<b><u>6th Grade</u></b><br />
This week the 6th graders review Artsonia and uploaded their cubes. <br />
The students will work on making a color wheel of their choosing and then will share them with their classmates. I am excited to see how they turn out.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Wednesday</u></b><br />
Our Wednesday classes are working on the art of textiles. The students are finishing up practicing their different type of stitches before they move onto creating an embroidery image. I will share some in-progress work next week.<br />

<br />
This website provides me with everything I want. It focuses on student safety. It allows my students to write about their artwork. It provides a path for parents, grandparents and friends to communicate with students about their projects. It helps me collect and gather digital artwork quickly and efficiently. I find it is super user friendly for me and the kids.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=70319" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="773" data-original-width="1600" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH1vORu1KQub048F1Dp39iXPFCGci1CPB1Y4HNbnYeFnepS-yqdX_fvj30BSm_lgnw0xN835zD1tRCwPb5Hi_et_l8xFPSc3M3dd2ysVLn0PtZLmo1URZ0iaEx45h9utn-b6V0aFW52Ig/s400/Screen+Shot+2019-08-18+at+9.01.27+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Finally, it also allows us to raise a few extra dollars for the art room. Sure I might only make a couple of hundred dollars a year but I really don't really push that side of the site (Artsonia sends enough emails for that 😉)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are working on our first uploads this week. I am excited to see the year off to a great start. </div>
Jen Carlislehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15674155979513439052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5383841147810492381.post-80787319974472019092019-08-21T06:39:00.000-07:002019-08-21T06:39:20.590-07:00Getting Back at it... I am working at getting back into the groove of the school year and back in the groove of blogging. It is my goal to create a place for my students (and their families) to review what we are doing in class each week. I am hoping to do a post of what we are working on, what is coming up and what we have finished.<br />
<br />
This week we worked on getting to know one another. I started the year with my "get to know the art room" slideshow and a first assignment. The inspiration for this project came <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/448592898504941/permalink/2600940279936848/" target="_blank">from a post on a</a> facebook art teacher group page. I knew when I saw it that it would be a perfect way to collaborate and start the year off learning a bit more about each other.<br />
<br />
Each student got a square and had to finish it in the following way.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7qZ6Zw2RbmshhmhllylnfKwodgCcAldpcuuygglCsijam89i2vK2543zfqjOuz4VJ5yPuE-0GdM-6DN1TZHW072CpqT3sW3cyXqKRqlchtyZs-6128hAa7ZyzolXk-bnOtU_pOD9TyAk/s1600/Screen+Shot+2019-08-18+at+8.30.47+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="530" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7qZ6Zw2RbmshhmhllylnfKwodgCcAldpcuuygglCsijam89i2vK2543zfqjOuz4VJ5yPuE-0GdM-6DN1TZHW072CpqT3sW3cyXqKRqlchtyZs-6128hAa7ZyzolXk-bnOtU_pOD9TyAk/s320/Screen+Shot+2019-08-18+at+8.30.47+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We talked about how if everyone does this; we will learn who they are, something from their past and something from their future. If they color it this way we will also create a really cool 3-d looking wall. I am super excited to see what they make. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ_YcCQzu5dDVWEJPI6BM2K-lyayE2zHaftRtgS4gmSnXk2pUWNT5nS8RckUbPjfJqcwZor0XD3PnuPYSlnZCHOwmpWsiOW3vkkcJ2EwUe-FvGJjtDBQHS2_9X8K74RQY-CTO6bZ8ArrY/s1600/IMG_20190815_105712828.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1328" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ_YcCQzu5dDVWEJPI6BM2K-lyayE2zHaftRtgS4gmSnXk2pUWNT5nS8RckUbPjfJqcwZor0XD3PnuPYSlnZCHOwmpWsiOW3vkkcJ2EwUe-FvGJjtDBQHS2_9X8K74RQY-CTO6bZ8ArrY/s320/IMG_20190815_105712828.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is my finished example. I remind them I have 30+ years of practice on them and then share how awesome it was when Mrs. Glanzer would draw a cake for everyones birthday in Kindergarten and how I dream of seeing the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Coliseum in Rome. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><u>Coming Next Week</u></b>: I am going to introduce the students to <a href="https://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=70319" target="_blank">Artsonia</a> and we are going to upload our cube drawings before we install the collaboration. </div>

I really missing seeing what my kiddo's have been up to. We are only in the second week of seeing students so I figured I would share some things I did to get ready for the school year.<br />
<br />
#1 Window Upgrade<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuBtfntvcnk9sAK7RcKT7gFqYhmm1aoUd3aIEKnJFBQVccqT9QZHxAdQu0WfTxWK-EsyHVVcF6WKiOILEsU1HVVH5NRbC2npDJXKOyririoGG1TosIagjxxjUaQTte_TAD6CJ6XHWM-w/s1600/IMG_20180810_114300695.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1493" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuBtfntvcnk9sAK7RcKT7gFqYhmm1aoUd3aIEKnJFBQVccqT9QZHxAdQu0WfTxWK-EsyHVVcF6WKiOILEsU1HVVH5NRbC2npDJXKOyririoGG1TosIagjxxjUaQTte_TAD6CJ6XHWM-w/s320/IMG_20180810_114300695.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My room has these awesome windows to the hallway. While I enjoy that people can see what we are doing, it can be distracting to some students to watch the kids walk by. Enter the window covering. Every year I glue something in my window... it is quickly washed off at the end of the year with some hot water and elbow grease. This year I used tissue paper and watered down glue to create this color swatch. The students love that you can only read "create" when the lights are on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
#2 Classroom Chalkboard Border</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the green area around my room. It is just paint but I treat it like a chalkboard (washing/repainting as needed). This year I asked the kids to tell me what they think art is on day one. I then took some of the 600+ answers and added them to the green areas around my room. I look forward to adding more next year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
#3 Elements of Art Cubes</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last thing we are adding this year is not done yet. My 6th graders are reviewing the elements of art (we study them in 5th grade) by creating cubes. Each side focuses on an element of art with the "cube" representing form. As students finish them this week I will add them to the ceiling. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well that sure feels good.... the first post in a long time. I hope everyone is off to a great start of their school year. I hope you are getting those names learned and finding your home/school balance. </div>

Sometimes change creeps into your life and slowly you become a different person.<br />
<br />
A few years ago I feel in love with blogging. I loved reading blogs. I loved writing blogs. It was a beautiful time. Then came twitter. Then came Instagram. Then Facebook.<br />
<br />
Then came the day I realized it was all just too much!<br />
<br />
I was struggling to keep up my digital presence. My digital world had me looking really good. I was able to teach rock star lessons, take my kids amazing places, cook wonderful food, serve on every committee and do it all. The truth was I was spending A LOT of time making it look that way. Meanwhile my kids were growing up, quickly, and I was hooked to a computer or my phone for most of it.<br />
<br />
Truth is, I have only one chance to be their mom and I was missing it! I was stressed out about doing the right things, posting the right things and I was addicted to making sure I knew everything.<br />
<br />
I would feel myself getting stressed so I would quit everything cold turkey. No Facebook. No Instagram. No Feedly. No Twitter... and that would feel great but it would only last for so long. Like many addicts I found I couldn't just "check real quick" without getting sucked back into the constant need for info-tainment.<br />
<br />
This summer I read a book called "Present over Perfect" by Shauna Niequist and it spoke to my heart in a way not many books have. It helped me see what I had been feeling for a while. The world is FULL of stuff. You have to choose the stuff that works for you. The stuff that makes you happy and fills your world. It is okay to set parameters... and to live by them.<br />
<br />
I have realized that I do enjoy being a part of the amazing online community of art educators but that I need balance between being online and being present in my life. So... my posts and photos may be sporadic. They might not be perfectly edited and professionally photographed but they will be me. They will be me sharing the things I love without the pressure of perfection and during the time I have allotted for them. I am sure it will be a learning adventure but here we go. -Jen<br />

He was sharing how he had created all these images for some of his favorite movies. Honestly I had never heard of him but sci-fi art isn't anything I have spent much time researching.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hrgiger.com/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8yXBTYdlyfJXp1p2ir0OeLUJM0a_YzgoMuhqTCAkvBUsuzlTioDwNuGMVgUJIzrQDYNilPiT4OFcm4SH9LhSyBccgHXqR54OxUbd-JWR4KTIF9xhYMkzFaIhn8Y52qiFJ1RPutzqrJWQ/s320/Portrait_HRGiger.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Today I took some time to look him up. He is a really interesting man and he creates some artwork I know some of my students would LOVE. You can find more about him by visiting his <a href="http://www.hrgiger.com/" target="_blank">website</a>. There was one piece from his website I knew I had to share. It is an example of a letter that his agent wrote to a person wanting advice. Here it is quoted directly from his <a href="http://www.hrgiger.com/" target="_blank">website.</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #351c75; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><b><i>"Dear Aspiring Artist:</i></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #351c75; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><b><i><br /></i></b></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #351c75;"><i>Here is my advice. Think of it as a five-year plan:</i></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #351c75;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<i><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Take whatever courses you find the most interesting.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Study closely the work of the Old Masters.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Stop making art that originates only from your own imagination.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Stay with one technique until you perfect it.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">On any given day, always be in the middle of reading a book. When you finish one, start the next. Fiction, nonfiction, biographies, autobiographies, history, science, psychology, or how to build a kite. Anything but go easy on the comic books.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Buy and read the first 6 pages of newspaper every day and also the editorial commentaries. Skip the entertainment section. Su Doku is fine. Do the crossword puzzle. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Fill up a sketchbook every month with pen or pencil drawings of the world around you, not from your imagination.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Buy a book on figure drawing. It's the only art book you will ever need.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Until you can draw an accurate portrait of someone, you don’t know how to draw.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Stay away from the airbrush. You'll never master it, hardly anyone ever has.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Visit every museum in your city. Often, until you have seen everything in it. Every kind of museum. Not only the art museums but, of course, those as well.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Forget about contemporary art by living artists, at least for the next few years.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Stay away from most art galleries. Go to art auctions. That's where the real action is.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Learn to play chess.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Take a business course.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Talk to you mother or father at least once a week.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Stop going to the movies until you have rented and seen every film on this list.</span><a href="http://www.time.com/time/2005/100movies/the_complete_list.html" target="_blank">http://www.time.com/time/2005/100movies/the_complete_list.html</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Do not watch television unless it’s the news or documentaries.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Do not use an Ipod. </span><span style="color: #351c75;">No video games, either.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Learn a foreign language.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Learn to cook.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Spend 8 hours in a hospital emergency room.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Save up money so you can travel to a foreign country within the next five years.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Do not litter.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Avoid politically correct people.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Vote in every election or never dare to utter a political opinion. You are not entitled to one.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Buy a digital camera and take photos every day.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">If you see nothing interesting to photograph, you will never be a good artist. Keep only one photo of every ten you take. Delete the rest. It will force you to learn how to edit the garbage from your life, to make choices, to recognize what has real value and what is superficial.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Visit an old age home.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Listen to classical music and jazz. If you are unable to appreciate it at least as much as contemporary music, you lack the sensitivity to develop into an artist of any real depth.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Go to the ballet. Classical or Modern, it doesn't matter. It will teach you to appreciate physical grace and the relationship between sound and movement.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Wake up every morning no later than 8 AM, regardless of what time you went to sleep.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Learn to play a musical instrument.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Learn to swim.</span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Keep your word.</span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Never explain your art. People who ask you to do so are idiots. </span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Never explain yourself. Better yet, never do anything that will, later, require you to explain yourself or to say you're sorry.</span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Always use spell check.</span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Stop aspiring and start doing.</span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">This will keep you very busy but it can't be helped.</span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">In my opinion, this is how you might, possibly, have a shot at becoming a good artist. </span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75;">Hope this helps,</span></div>

I had them select an emoji they loved. They they had to choose a color(s) that would reflect the same emotion. Finally they had to select lines that showed their emotion. We put all the parts together and finished them with oil pastels. I love them!<br />

They focused on using shapes to sketch. They had to plan for and use a color theory. They also had to select and research an animals to share, demonstrating their personal voice. They were pretty fun to see all finished.<br />

It was amazing. I have been fascinated by FLW since I read the book "Loving Frank" by Nancy Horan but touring this house and seeing his genius in person was breath taking.<br />
<br />
Fast forward to my 5th graders shape assignment. We studied geometric shapes and created FLW inspired "windows."<br />

<br />
At the end of last school year my 5th graders were finishing up their perspective projects<br />

I had them create collaborative tape murals in perspective using blue painters tape and old milk posters. They were a blast to make and the kids had a great time working together. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is <a href="http://www.booooooom.com/2016/11/02/powerful-portraits-of-ex-gang-members-with-tattoos-digitally-removed/" target="_blank">BOOOOOOOM's</a> explanation:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Slab Serif", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; text-align: start;">In “Skin Deep” photographer Steven Burton digitally removes the tattoos of ex-gang members, creating dramatic before-and-after style portraits that offer many subjects a glimpse of themselves they haven’t seen for decades. Not only do the images elicit strong emotional responses and personal reflections, the transformative series raises broader questions about social stigma and how we perceive others.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I am not sure my middle schoolers are ready for this conversation (at least not this early in the year), I think the concept is so powerful. Even those of us who think we are open minded and don't judge people can't help but question ourself when we see these photos side by side. </div>

I work to make the focus be on creating digital art. My students love it and I love that our only set up is handing out iPads (art teachers who paint, clay, collage, etc during the rest of the week understand).<br />
<br />
We started with VALUE LANDSCAPES where students learn how to use drawing pad and create a landscape with changing values to show space.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA1ZGkhxtNNjuIBoS44nP6Kgx10OG9bkM0pqvw80wqYCd3iifbD8npEmMOTVkPFsGCm2PS7fl3OcXhq8KSa2_1pF3fNkjPJzvLGw3GMUESt3o1tDr178U96olV42rf12HaCABMMzVVpRM/s1600/47884678.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA1ZGkhxtNNjuIBoS44nP6Kgx10OG9bkM0pqvw80wqYCd3iifbD8npEmMOTVkPFsGCm2PS7fl3OcXhq8KSa2_1pF3fNkjPJzvLGw3GMUESt3o1tDr178U96olV42rf12HaCABMMzVVpRM/s320/47884678.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we moved onto LINE PORTRAITS where students reviewed the facial rules and contour line while drawing a self portrait. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaWul1tQ2gw-QWK56PnCSJbiQhgqHlXAbFPrTbl8szMnKTXJ75HfSj8bw79OhJmN2kAlFZHjXkTbek2nXztsyUXNxZNph9IZpCtjpRzEDcpulHwlScvQygIg29BetroJQRC69vUmOqiko/s1600/48123249.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaWul1tQ2gw-QWK56PnCSJbiQhgqHlXAbFPrTbl8szMnKTXJ75HfSj8bw79OhJmN2kAlFZHjXkTbek2nXztsyUXNxZNph9IZpCtjpRzEDcpulHwlScvQygIg29BetroJQRC69vUmOqiko/s320/48123249.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For a fun break, our next project was using FriendBlender to recreate a famous artwork with my students' faces. They had to research the artist and artwork so they could write a quality artist statement. This is one of my favorite projects for them to do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikn3be7kJNons61klVI5bpwTL-NfqJxaoE2PcrLN6ttJEuSxam1I148-GNvExxZmi3SDwXuoRw5bJlZD6iTFP1ACHnfMMTUfhXLrKrsh-MUtkD1BEYlbfZcqbixTuwdYKRAHMFN5S8q4Y/s1600/48525094.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikn3be7kJNons61klVI5bpwTL-NfqJxaoE2PcrLN6ttJEuSxam1I148-GNvExxZmi3SDwXuoRw5bJlZD6iTFP1ACHnfMMTUfhXLrKrsh-MUtkD1BEYlbfZcqbixTuwdYKRAHMFN5S8q4Y/s320/48525094.jpg" width="252" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our 4th project was a review of STILL LIVES with a focus on colors and blending. They were still working with drawing pad and their skills were improving. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgviE2kbeAjm9_S7VE5xDNqqVA4wXG_iPTbTr3NDaOWNNHxpX5wOoMGF62ULZNWXykG7a0YJwPw4eNaj3lhqU-NOesGsPdZMhyphenhyphenLnZavWBrARH_spngCl3GhE9_DP6LQ_Ndf_vk5MdrU-Xo/s1600/48965149.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgviE2kbeAjm9_S7VE5xDNqqVA4wXG_iPTbTr3NDaOWNNHxpX5wOoMGF62ULZNWXykG7a0YJwPw4eNaj3lhqU-NOesGsPdZMhyphenhyphenLnZavWBrARH_spngCl3GhE9_DP6LQ_Ndf_vk5MdrU-Xo/s320/48965149.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After we finished our still lives we reviewed how important our use of colors can be. Therefore, we created a COLOR WHEEL using the app TypeDrawing. The kids had a really fun time reviewing the color wheel with this fun app. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLvB9t_LKiRG3Zqwju7nRV4g4S1RrdRso6hNpy4PenbhzbrpXNjfEFDWU6SglrrhoUDvtGpkvx3Gmd0eAPAG7bzacme7uCWl5igN0saSrkm6R_Y0Mp2V79Z6Exqgg3RAVWU07eO7DmDP0/s1600/48981285.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLvB9t_LKiRG3Zqwju7nRV4g4S1RrdRso6hNpy4PenbhzbrpXNjfEFDWU6SglrrhoUDvtGpkvx3Gmd0eAPAG7bzacme7uCWl5igN0saSrkm6R_Y0Mp2V79Z6Exqgg3RAVWU07eO7DmDP0/s320/48981285.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As students finished their color wheel we discussed how the images were balanced. Did they use radial, symmetrical or asymmetrical balance. We then finished the quarter by creating radial designs that use their names to create the image. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhph5vhsvGUB4FqGMltnDq3c443oFAuQg8iuuPvYx5clfl31mzzQBI7uNgaf6XJYANYssg8-oVEYA49ivPE9i0-fEATd8B6KdqcFTBRC6nUHGuDqQnym8XZPBrE3pQY_8n-HUU_Kz-KBgI/s1600/48980861.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhph5vhsvGUB4FqGMltnDq3c443oFAuQg8iuuPvYx5clfl31mzzQBI7uNgaf6XJYANYssg8-oVEYA49ivPE9i0-fEATd8B6KdqcFTBRC6nUHGuDqQnym8XZPBrE3pQY_8n-HUU_Kz-KBgI/s320/48980861.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All in all, it was a fun quarter of art projects that lead to a lot of great discussions how easy doesn't always equal quality. It was also a really great way to review a lot of vocabulary we have covered in 5th grade (and before). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Every year we make the trek (that is what you call riding a bus for 2+ hours both ways) to Omaha for Celebrating Creativity at the Joslyn Art Museum. You can read about more trips <a href="http://carlisleartclass.blogspot.com/search?q=celebrating+creativity" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
This year was another WONDERFUL experience.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjARuQ2E51mgtZmu7GDlUZ0_myFM76o0r77rfJ40rd0egUvAKcWi2764GTzNPxs3aeh5_IvzzXefF9Op9GA12LdxluMH1SvEhGR3igxnOIv4tt-wrSS8avcDundzxXZsjjYIBL-wM4CTBE/s1600/IMG_20161027_104509190_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjARuQ2E51mgtZmu7GDlUZ0_myFM76o0r77rfJ40rd0egUvAKcWi2764GTzNPxs3aeh5_IvzzXefF9Op9GA12LdxluMH1SvEhGR3igxnOIv4tt-wrSS8avcDundzxXZsjjYIBL-wM4CTBE/s320/IMG_20161027_104509190_HDR.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Students started the morning with 3 sessions. A tour of an specific gallery. I tagged along for the Dirt Meridian show. It was inspiring. This show focused on the photographs taken by Andrew Moore as he traveled along the 100th Meridian. These large print digital photographs were breathtaking. The docents led the students through some writing activities. I was so proud of the short poems my students wrote.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijaOjePK0k7XJ6vh8aA1LGwPeUMHo9_JFRihtQUXkxs_XmMu9gnO07uMgSHbq5IUvQAeJqtg8SMfjU6mUNPGTANRZdJrY89F4SvBQKyCzrU-S1zq4qkpMMe2ZG3am4Zu7i5VtRf29JPwQ/s1600/IMG_20161027_104556264.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijaOjePK0k7XJ6vh8aA1LGwPeUMHo9_JFRihtQUXkxs_XmMu9gnO07uMgSHbq5IUvQAeJqtg8SMfjU6mUNPGTANRZdJrY89F4SvBQKyCzrU-S1zq4qkpMMe2ZG3am4Zu7i5VtRf29JPwQ/s320/IMG_20161027_104556264.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They also attended 2 different sessions. One of the students favorites is always the theatre makeup. Can you believe this was made with chocolate and strawberry sauce? Today's creepiest one was done on a students bald head. I swear it looked real from across the room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpZeE2c_dTDTV1RFUfj7n2E_sjZpLKb23vCuRUT9plZa_OAFqiDlfhRgfxu2XzVjn5g8l1sFPkjbShoivk8nkczQOAfVyuQ-dVP7NS0BsbCjpPudJzu2aOrdxxEKB9lY9glLP2vqYBFn0/s1600/IMG_20161027_111401811.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpZeE2c_dTDTV1RFUfj7n2E_sjZpLKb23vCuRUT9plZa_OAFqiDlfhRgfxu2XzVjn5g8l1sFPkjbShoivk8nkczQOAfVyuQ-dVP7NS0BsbCjpPudJzu2aOrdxxEKB9lY9glLP2vqYBFn0/s320/IMG_20161027_111401811.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Speaking of chocolate sauce... one of the sessions I stepped into was making prints with your food. Students were using photo paper and food of different consistencies to make these prints. The whole room smelled like a chefs kitchen and the kids were having so much fun! I wish I could have done this session! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGlT_3xZExwArzHuE8qJwSrqfLJVsTqh1wn_jNLOlOrrhYvJLZeyMxzLOoe76SFtiQuLgsEvUFw6iCMW7KLT79UaJ-2MyVdwGPulhOy2c_LxeJX0MXGh2-wkEBzM5BV7Qn_Y9-38ehd-U/s1600/IMG_20161027_111201359.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGlT_3xZExwArzHuE8qJwSrqfLJVsTqh1wn_jNLOlOrrhYvJLZeyMxzLOoe76SFtiQuLgsEvUFw6iCMW7KLT79UaJ-2MyVdwGPulhOy2c_LxeJX0MXGh2-wkEBzM5BV7Qn_Y9-38ehd-U/s320/IMG_20161027_111201359.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Outside of the classrooms there were some really, really intriguing weavings. I had to snap a couple of these student made projects. These were created by students in the Joslyn's art programs. They were beautiful and inspiring. </div>

After the stimulating morning I had to recharge with a total foodie moment. The Durham Cafe always has the best food. Today's tomato bisques and greek salad didn't disappoint (and totally beat a typical school lunch).<br />

The day concluded with a ANOTHER WONDERFUL presentation by the Omaha Symphony. Every year they amaze me by how they tie art and music together. Today they focused on the importance of appreciating the history of art and music. How being an active participant in music and art makes the experience so much more. </div>
